Parent - Teacher Conferences
Parent -Teacher conferences can be very valuable in the right situation. However, they should be considered a last resort to help students with academic difficulties. Before a parent-teacher conference can be scheduled, several other avenues should be explored, including, but not limited to: 1.) Staying after school - Teachers are available nearly every Monday - Thursday from 2:15 until 3:05. This is a great time to ask additional questions, receive further instruction, study for an upcoming test, begin homework assignments, etc... We find that this works best when the student and teacher have discussed staying after prior to it happening. There are rare occasions when teachers are not available after school. One example is that on the first Monday of each month, there is a school-wide faculty meeting. Additional after school commitments, such as parent - teacher conferences can also interfere with a teacher's ability to stay with students after school, so again, it's always best to pre-arrange after school meetings.
2.) Learning Center - The MHS Learning Center is staffed throughout the day by Mrs. Hannux, Mrs. Pettinger, Mrs. Richards, and Ms. Wood. In addition to this full-time staff, various content teachers are also available at different times throughout the day. If a student is struggling in a class, this is a great place to seek help. Students can obtain a pass to go to the Learning Center during their study hall time. To do so, they should see Mrs. Hannux, Mrs. Pettinger, Mrs. Richards, or Ms. Wood. The Learning Center is also available to students after school.
3.) Individual contact with teachers - Often times we find that a phone conversation, or e-mail exchange, between parent and teacher can effectively address many concerns/issues. This allows teachers to remain available to assist students after school, but still allow for open dialogue between school and home. For those parents who use PowerSchool, e-mail addresses can be obtained by clicking on the teacher's name. Additionally, the staff directory will allow you to find contact information for any teacher or staff member. If the student is still having difficulty after consistently trying the above suggestions, please contact your student's counselor to discuss a parent - teacher conference.
